John Duncan Obituary, Death – John Duncan, who led Chesterfield to the FA Cup semi-finals in 1997, has passed away at the age of 73. Sir Alex Ferguson and Sean Dyche lead the tributes to the former Dundee and Tottenham striker, who also managed Scunthorpe, Hartlepool, and Ipswich from 1981 to 1990. Duncan had two stints at Chesterfield, the first from 1983 to 1987 and the second from 1993 to 2000, the latter following a stint as a teacher. In a statement issued by the League Managers Association, Ferguson remarked, “I will always recall John with great respect and affection.
I recall him playing up front for Dundee while I was playing and managing in Scotland, and he went on to become an exceptional striker for Tottenham. “I will never forget John, as Chesterfield’s manager in 1997, carrying his Second Division team to the FA Cup semi-finals, which was an incredible feat. John possessed such modesty and a wonderful sense of humor, and I just spoke with him a few weeks ago. I send my deepest condolences to his daughters, sister, and companion, as well as their families.
Former Burnley manager Dyche captained Chesterfield in their memorable and controversial 3-3 draw at Old Trafford against Middlesbrough 25 years ago. “I worked with John for a number of years at Chesterfield FC during some of the club’s most successful periods,” he told the LMA. “He was an outstanding manager who worked tirelessly to bring out the best in his staff and players in order to build a formidable and successful team. As my career progressed from player to coach to manager, he not only served as my manager, but also as my comrade and mentor.
